Just peal it off the backing and stick it on, right? Not if you want a professional look. Applying decals is within itself an artform. Lines need to be held, placement is key, complicated compound curves need to be worked around, and if placed incorrectly will not last very long and will look like shoddy craftsmanship. Big stickers Large decals are hard to handle and usually stick to the surface before your ready to place them there. With large stickers the two most frequent issues that happen are air bubbles, and wrinkles. Two things can be used to help eliminate these issues. Heat the sticker with a hair dryer. This softens up the sticker and makes the vinyl its printed on more malleable. The sticker can then stretch and curve around corners. The other trick is to saturate the body with glass cleaner or soapy water, place the sticker on the wet body. Slide it into position. Then squeegee the excess glass cleaner out from between the sticker and body panel. A credit card works well for a makeshift squeegee. This trick works really well for sticker placement. Small stickers For small stickers, accurately placing them can be tricky, even with the glass cleaner method. Placing the small sticker leaves fingerprints on the back side. Fingerprints on the backside of clear stickers is unsightly, not only are they unsightly, it messes with the adhesion power of the glue on the sticker. Using a hobby knife to help place these small decals, will not only allow you place these stickers with pinpoint accuracy, but will also prevent fingerprints from being place on the underside of the sticker. Clean edges Most kits come with precut or die-cut stickers and decals. Granted this saves us some time, its not always the best solution for a clean looking RC car. Precut clear decals can sometimes have to much boarder leftover from the actual logo. To help clean the look up, put a fresh blade in the hobby knife and trim around these logos. Thi will make for a very clean look. Trimming the boarders around the logos can be done on the sticker sheet or after it is placed on the body. Complex curves Getting decals to conform around complex or compound curves is challenging. Again our main friend here is using a bit of heat with a hair dryer but, also making slits or relief cuts in the sticker is also helpful. Heat is our main friend when it comes to making a thick tough to bend sticker conform. The relief cuts will be needed if the sticker is being difficult and doesn't want to conform to the curves using heat.. Helpful hints Don't place the stickers on the body, without removing the overspray film Clean your hands before applying the stickers. This will help eliminate the transfer of oil off your grubby little paws to the sticker Air bubbles and wrinkles are no match for your hobby knife. Popping an air bubble or making a relief cut can help the most stubborn decals that do not want to lay flat on the body contours, smooth out easily.
