Thinking about entering your first Working Equitation show but not sure where to start? This video walks you through some tips to prepare for your first competition experience, and how to set yourself up for success — even if you’re brand new to the sport. One of the best pieces of advice for new riders is to attend a Working Equitation show before competing — either as a spectator or, even better, as a volunteer. Come without your horse! Volunteering gives you an inside look at how the show runs, how tests flow, how the obstacles are set, and what judges are looking for, all without pressure. When you are ready to compete, some shows have two options: • Regular Competition Entry • Schooling Round (a lower-pressure way to gain experience and confidence). You are allowed have your coach come into the arena, provide assistance with the gate or even hold the Garrocha next to your horse as you walk the Bull Line. Many Working Equitation shows in Region 1 offer educational clinics on Thursday and Friday before the competition. Level 7 Masters rider and trainer Kimberlee Barker frequents the shows at the Oregon Horse Center. These clinics are a fantastic way to prepare both horse and rider before the show. 🎤 In this video, I also feature insights from Julia Alonso, Chef d’Équipe for the USA Working Equitation team, who shares valuable suggestions for riders stepping into their first show experience. 📌 Upcoming videos from this event include: • 5 Tips for Going to Your First Working Equitation Show • In-depth interview with Julia Alonso in her team USA role as Chef d’Equipe • More behind-the-scenes and educational Working Equitation content about unique breeds and making a Garrocha pole. 00:00 - 01:30 Intro to Oregon Horse Center Working Equitation 01:30 - 02:28 Dressage Phase 02:28 - 05:12 Julie Alonzo Show Organizer's advice 05:12 - 06:28 Walking the obstacle course 06:28 - 07:48 Ease of Handling 07:48 - 08:18 Meet other competitors 08:18 - 10:40 Speed Phase 10:40 - 11:14 100 Subscribers!
