Short Summary The RCSA has invited two speakers who have experience with building or designing tiny homes in South Africa. Tiny houses, alternatively refer to micro-homes or small houses, a concept that revolves around creating small, compact, and often mobile living spaces. About this Event The Tiny Home movement is a social and architectural trend that advocates for living in extremely small and efficiently designed houses, often ranging from around 37-60 square meters in size. These homes are built with a focus on maximizing functionality and minimizing environmental impact. Proponents of the movement emphasize simplicity, sustainability, and a more intentional way of living, often seeking to reduce their ecological footprint. This movement has gained popularity as a response to rising housing costs, a desire for a more minimalist lifestyle, and concerns about resource consumption and urban sprawl. Finally, sustainable living practices can be incorporating into the tiny houses by constructing them with eco-friendly materials and incorporating energy-efficient features, to reduce the environmental impact. Speaker 1: Reimaging space and Remembering the Basics (Ryan Meiring) Ryan Meiring is looking at implementing an intensive program which mimics the natural movement patterns of wild herbivores on the plains and the birds that follow them. His proposed methodology has been developed from the teachings of Allan Savory and his work in fighting desertification, Joel Salatin whose book "Folks this Ain't Normal" did much to shift his thinking and modern farmers like Justin Rhodes and Richard Perkins. Ryan also believes that many of the challenges facing farming, like security, locality, seasonality, access to markets, management, quality control and even political uncertainty around larger farm land in South Africa, can be overcome by de-centralising operations and crowd-sourcing production. He believes that technology can now provide the necessary network and platform tools to co-ordinate and aggregate production across a "disparate farm". He also believes that this model can therefore scale and that a collective of tiny farms could create the critical mass and economies of scale required to engage with off-takers and make a meaningful positive impact on people, planet and profit...and purpose. Speaker 2: Tiny Homes video presentation (Justus van der Hoven) Justus is an architect and property developer born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has a passion for creating visions of new property development projects by using evocative, large-scale drawings to depict stories of habitation, connectivity and urban life at a city-scale. Justus creates cityscape storyboards to narrate subject matter such as intense urban sprawl, future mass densification, vertical townships and the ultimate sustainability of cities. He also produces works in collaboration with Hoven Design in a variety of media such as drone photogrammetry, painting and film-making. He has more than 10 years of experience in South African real estate, gained by completing a number of large-scale commercial projects, most recently as the Architect and Development Manager for the Firestation Rosebank Commercial Offices (10,000 m²) in Johannesburg. He is currently completing The Twickenham student housing project (810 Student Beds) as Architect in Johannesburg, South Africa. Justus’ background in architecture, urban design and planning brings a unique perspective to his self-initiated commercial development projects that he drives through his property development company Ruim.
