Opened on 14 February 1870 to serve the town of Horwich, Bolton but by 1884 the land to the east of the branch line, south of the town had been chosen for a major locomotive works. (Next Video) Horwich railway station closed to passenger traffic on 27 September 1965, and goods the next year. Date Opened: 14.02.1870 Company on Opening: Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Date Closed to Passengers: 27.09.1965 Completely Closed: 25.04.1966 On Closing Company: British Railways (London Midland Region) Horwich Station was the northern terminus of a 1.4-mile branch connected to the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Bolton and Preston Line. A long single platform was provided where a single-storey sandstone station building stood. The station had a waiting room, booking office, storerooms and toilets. The station also housed a good shed with 5 sidings located to the west of the station. A 7-ton crane and weighing bridge were also provided. At the time of opening, Horwich had trains to Bolton and Manchester.
