When customers call me to buy a watch, many blindly ask, “Does it come with box and papers?” I wonder if they even know what they're asking! I'm not saying that box and papers don't matter when it comes to luxury watches, but the truth is that it depends. For some watches, like Patek Philippe models, box and papers are more important than for Rolex. To start off, most Rolex boxes are not really expensive because they're easy to come by. Patek Philippe boxes, on the other hands, are of much higher quality, so they can affect the price of the overall watch relatively more than for a Rolex. The same holds true for the papers of a Patek. The reality is that most people blindly ask for the watch and papers when buying a watch because it gives them a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. This is true because, a lot of times, people misplace the box and/or papers over the years after they purchased a watch and can't find them when they're going to sell it. This doesn't mean that the watch is fake or of lower quality in any way. For that same reason, don't let your dealer beat you up over the head for not having the watch's paper and try to give you a crappy deal because if that! Instead of being so obsessed with the watch and papers for the watch, I suggest that you focus on buying the watch from a reputable watch dealer and getting a receipt that includes a matching serial number. That is like the title of your watch, so it's important. Other than that, if buying the watch with the box and papers is going to make you feel better, then go ahead and do it, especially if it's your first watch purchase.
