We put the small batch SMASH technique to the test again this week with a cool side by side of Cascade hops. We received from a great viewer friend of ours some Cascade hops that were grown in Canada. We also compare them to a batch of hops grown in our own home town again by John's brother. We brewed one gallon batches for each hop. John spreads the hops throughout the boil to encourage a range of bitterness, flavor and aroma presentation for each hop. (We've done this alot and you can find more vids on our SMASH beer playlists). Neither of these hops tasted like classic Cascade. We expect grapefruit and pine but in both of these we got a ton of generic fruit. The Canadian version was very much like Juicy Fruit gum with a bit of floral note. The U.S. closer to home batch was more fruit loop cereal-like with a strong geranium note to it. Both were not what we expected but they might fill in the gaps well when blended appropriately with other varieties of hops. Have you brewed with non-traditionally grown regional hops? Maybe with your own hops. Tell us about your experiences with hop terroir. CHEERS! #CascadeHops #HopsTerroir #BrewDudes Check out our blog: https://www.brew-dudes.com/smash-beer...
