Market Gardening in Wrangell, Alaska Week Ending August 9, 2025 The forecast this week was for nice weather with the week ending in inches of rain, so I harvest all of the remaining NE 5 - 7 garlic beds after harvesting the NE4 garlic bed last week. I separate the garlic from each bed into smaller and larger clove bulbs in order to use the larger size for planting in the fall. Note that the NE 5 - 7 garlic, which was mulched with seaweed/leaves has very few goofy bulbs compared to NE4 garlic, which was mulched purely in seaweed. I end up prepping one box of smaller size Georgian Fire variety to sell this week after selling a box of Georgian Crystal at the market last week. I temporarily store the garlic in boxes until I can get the curing racks set up in the boat shed at the end of the week. A lot of deer sightings this week in the garden, and a baby squirrel visits the nut jar for the first time. For lettuce mix this week, I harvest NW6 lofty salad mix regrowth from the original three seeded rows while the other three rows of newly seeded lettuce in the bed are still small. Added to the mix is baby kale from NE1 and baby chard from NE2. In the NE 1 kale bed, I thin for a second time the lacinato kale, removing one plant from in between to give about 12” - 15” spacing to allow the plants to grow larger, and harvest the small leaves from the red Russian kale growing around those plants. In the NE2 chard bed, I harvest the small plants surrounding the larger plants that I had selected to grow to maturity. The leaf of the smaller chard plants has a lot of discoloration, so there is only a small amount to add to the lettuce mix. After harvesting, thinning, and weeding these beds, I switch to larger hoops and row cover to make room for the larger plants. The basil in the two small greenhouses is growing thickly and beautifully, so I harvest from GH1 where I harvested more lightly the week before. I could sell a lot more basil, but don’t have enough customers for all of the basil. Out of this makeshift garden this year, I’m only selling lettuce mix, basil, garlic, and green onions this week. At the beginning of the week, we receive a gift of three Tulameen raspberry plants from Al & Margie, and I plant them into potting soil in buckets so that I can move them around when I have decided on a permanent location for them. The bushes of raspberries from John & Sue are just starting to turn color. Music: (Intro & End) On My Own by Bail Bonds (Other Clips) Van Life Rager by Everet Almond
