A side-by-side longplay video featuring the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation versions of Thunder Force V. These were both played and recorded from original hardware going into a XRGB-2+, then run into a Datapath E1S capture card. Audio was captured directly. Both are the Japanese versions of the games. PS1 version was played on a Japanese PS2 Slim with component cables, while the Saturn version was played with RGB (Euro SCART) cables. The video begins with Stage 1 on both versions. To see the introduction videos, skip to the end of the video. Time Codes: 00:00 - Stage 1 02:26 - Stage 2 06:03 - Stage 3 10:14 - Stage 4 15:03 - Stage 5 19:28 - Stage 6 23:18 - Final Bosses + Ending 33:11 - Introductions For anyone new here, I've actually done several of these types of videos in the past. Battletoads (NES/Genesis), Castlevania III (NES/Famicom), Splatterhouse (FM Towns Marty/Turbo Grafx), etc. Check those out here: • DUAL PLAYS (Side by Side Longplay Vid... There are a lot of differences to touch on, some not featured in the video itself: PS1 image looks softer overall. It may run at a slightly lower resolution, but I'm not 100% sure. Due to the hardware differences between the two platforms, you will find many visual effects being handled differently, such as the "infinite floor" effect often seen in the Saturn version. Colors seem to be handled differently as well. While some sections of the game will look very similar, the colors used are different between the versions. Option menu screen is laid out slightly differently between the two versions. PS1 game has more modes and unlockable ships with codes that alter the gameplay slightly. Load times are slightly snappier in the PS1 version. Audio is brighter in the PS1 game, while the Saturn one seems to have more bass and is slightly more muffled. Post-final boss escape sequences are different: PS1 version is FMV (and honestly a little more exciting with the sound effects used). Saturn version's is in-engine and the credits roll up during the sequence. PS1 version has a new introduction and a new FMV that plays before entering the final level. Saturn final boss's weak point is its main body, while in the PS1 version it's the boss's head. This is the only gameplay difference I could find. Saturn version does get choppy at points (primarily boss fights), while the PS1 version maintains its 60fps at pretty much all times. In the rare moment the PS1 version does suffer performance issues, it implements slowdown instead of skipping frames like the Saturn version does. Many full screen transparent effects on the Saturn version, while many are missing in the PS1 version. Some transparent effects are nicer in the PS1 version, while the Saturn one will use dithering for them. The rocking intro sequence was redone for the PS1 version. Same backing tune, but a different sequence plays out. Ending "Guardian" sequence sounds far more cleaner on the Saturn version, not to mention the video looks sharper as well. There's a sort of reverb or echo effect on the PS1 version's sequence. There are more subtle differences, but I'll let you look for them.
