A small reminder for travelers: always double-check your meal preferences on flights, especially if you follow specific dietary beliefs. This is my second video, where I travel from Sri Lanka to Kathmandu, Nepal on an early morning flight with SriLankan Airlines. However, this journey turned out to be quite shocking and unexpected. During web check-in, I clearly selected a Veg / Hindu Meal, but during the flight, I was served a non-vegetarian meal. Thankfully, I checked the food before eating — otherwise, as a vegetarian, I would have unknowingly eaten non-veg. When I questioned the cabin crew, I was told that according to their “universal system,” Hindu belief passengers are served non-vegetarian meals, and that a Hindu meal means non-veg. This explanation left me completely shocked. Later, they did provide a vegetarian meal, which included idli, sambar, and yogurt, but honestly, the taste was very unpleasant and unusual, so I couldn’t finish it. Our flight landing was also delayed due to ATC clearance issues, and we reached Kathmandu later than expected. After arriving, we faced more trouble while looking for a cab. We tried booking through the local app Pathao, but the driver canceled on his own. Eventually, we found another cab and headed to our hostel. We stayed in Thamel, one of Kathmandu’s most popular areas, well known for cafés, restaurants, hotels, hostels, and tourists. After checking in and resting for a while, we went out at night to explore the area. We visited local markets filled with tote bags, knitted bags, trekking gear, and travel essentials commonly used for Nepal treks. Later, we stopped at a very old and traditional momo place to try authentic Nepali momos. I also met my local Nepali friend Yomit, who is a fellow content creator. We spent some time talking, sharing experiences, and exploring the city together. Later at night, while walking around, we came across an ancient square and a temple, which added a peaceful and cultural touch to the day. This video shows a real and honest travel experience, including airline food confusion and my first impressions of Kathmandu.
