Drake Sues Universal--What's His Angle?

I am not an attorney and I am not attached to any of the camps mentioned in this video. This is strictly my OPINION as someone who has been working in the music business for 32 years. Drake filed a PETITION today, Monday, Nov 25, 2024...NOT a lawsuit as some of the media have claimed. It appears he's frustrated that UMG (his distributor and Kendrick Lamar's distributor--it appears they both have licensing deals with UMG) used unfair and illegal business tactics to promote Not Like Us this summer. The fact that this was filed 3 days after Kendrick dropped an album (that needs to be promoted) is extremely suspect, because IF what Drake is alleging is true, Universal (Capitol) will not be as comfortable using the same tactics to promote his new release as Not Like Us. Although I admittedly thought Drake was being petty, I don't think that's driving this. My guess is that he's trying to negotiate OUT of his Universal licensing deal, and sees this as his leverage. He's figuratively putting a legal gun to their head. If they did use any kind of payola, fake streams, or bots to promote Not Like Us, they will need to settle asap and get back to business as usual for GNX. To be fair, Universal's response to the lawsuit is that they did not artificially inflate Not Like Us and that Drake's allegations are "offensive and untrue," according to Music Business Worldwide.
