Firearm Safety & Concealed Carry Training Course Lesson 8: Firearm Safety Basics In this lesson, Taylor and Skip discuss different types of malfunctions that can occur when firing a firearm and how to correct them. They cover delayed discharge, squib load, and stovepipe malfunctions. For delayed discharge, the firearm should be kept pointed in a safe direction and the shooter should wait 30 seconds before attempting to clear or unload the round. In the case of a squib load, where the bullet does not have enough powder to clear the barrel, the firearm should again be kept pointed in a safe direction and unloaded. If at a gun range, the range officer can assist in clearing the projectile from the barrel, otherwise a cleaning tool can be used to push the projectile backwards towards the action. Stovepipe malfunctions occur in semi-automatic firearms when a spent cartridge does not clear the action, and the shooter should set the selector to the safe position, remove the magazine, and pull back the top receiver to clear the spent case. It is important to always prioritize safety and be familiar with the specific malfunctions that can occur with different types of firearms.
