As an extension of the move toward more chromaticism as a way of self-expression, discussed in Episode #12, the composers of Second Viennese School, eventually crossed over to atonality at the beginning of the 20th century. The examples examined in this episode are: an excerpt from Piano Sonata Op. 1 (1909) by Alban Berg (1885-1935), and an excerpt from the first movement of Schoenberg's (1874-1951) Three Piano Pieces, Op. 11 (1909) "Poco Piano" is a series of introductory talks and demonstrations about classical music by pianist, Makiko Hirata. For more information on Makiko, please visit her website at: http://musicalmakiko.com/en. For information on her CDs please go to: http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/MakikoHi... The project was made possible with the help and support of many wonderful artists and friends, including Mark Rodrieg (sound recording), Francis X. Schmidt (sound mixing) and all of the staff at the Digital Media Center at Rice University, especially Nadalia Y. Liu.
