(25 Oct 1995) T/I: 10:14:45 The lower house of Italy's parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, on Tuesday night (24/10) began debating a motion of no confidence in the government of Lamberto Dini. The motion was introduced by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who hopes to win any new contest. On Tuesday, a hardline Communist leader Fausto Bertinotti supported Berlusconi's centre-right Freedom Alliance on the motion. In an address to parliament, Berlusconi urged Dini to resign before the vote. Critics accuse Berlusconi of having orchestrated the crisis to force elections before he is due to stand trial in January 1996. He is very interested in pushing elections as quickly as possible. He has simply looked the situation and probably calculated that the longer he stays away from a new election date the fewer chances he has to win, at least as the leader of a centre-right coalition going into that election, and especially as that election gets much closer to the date of his own hearings in Milan on corruption charges" CU bureau de change CU board showing exchange rates Young woman enters and hands dollars to clerk CU lira being paid out GVs newspaper headlines LA REPUBBLICA: An assault on Dini IL MESSAGERO: Berlusconi to Dini: Resign before the vote.
