Hi Everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about the mysterious respiratory illness in dogs. The cause of this respiratory illness has not been diagnosed yet, but the signs of symptoms of this disease are quite similar. The respiratory disease started on the West Coast and we believe Oregon is where the first case was diagnosed. The respiratory disease starts off like kennel cough, but it does not resolve with kennel cough antibiotics. Your veterinarian should take x-rays, complete lab work, and try to diagnose the disease with PCR or culturing. If your dog does have the mysterious respiratory disease, hospitalization will be needed. Some dogs have died from this disease, but most can be treated with IV antibiotics, fluids and supportive care. Some people believe inhalers or chloramphenicol can help treat these dogs, but it is unknown what the organism is, so treatment still lacks direction; however, treatment should always be started early and aggressively. Possible Symptoms of the Mysterious Respiratory Illness in Dogs: Coughing: Persistent or severe coughing may indicate respiratory problems. The cough may be productive and wet. Labored Breathing: If your dog is struggling to breathe or breathing rapidly, it's a cause for concern. Fever: A normal dog's temperature may be as high as 102.5 F, but when they are sick the temperature will go over 102.5 F. Nasal Discharge: Unusual or excessive discharge from the nose could be a sign of respiratory issues. Wheezing or Whistling Sounds: These sounds during breathing may indicate an obstruction or respiratory problem. Lethargy: A lack of energy or enthusiasm can be a sign that your dog is not feeling well. If your dog is experiencing any of these symptoms, or if you notice any other unusual behavior, it's crucial to seek professional veterinary advice. Respiratory issues can be serious and may require prompt medical attention. The veterinarian will perform a thorough examination, possibly recommend diagnostic tests such as X-rays or bloodwork, and suggest appropriate treatment based on the findings. Please contact your veterinarian immediately for guidance on your dog's specific situation.
