Armed members of far-right groups have appeared at numerous protests as President Trump continues to criticize peaceful protesters for their sustained uprising in the streets against anti-Black racism and police violence. The presence of right-wing groups is occurring alongside a much larger pattern of coordinated infiltrations into the military and law enforcement by neo-Nazi organizations, says journalist Ali Winston. Ethan Melzer, a 22-year-old Army private, was recently charged with plotting to attack his own military unit by sending sensitive details to al-Qaeda in coordination with the Order of the Nine Angles. Individuals in such groups “are interested in working with or in whatever organizations they’re able to use in order to kind of further their goals of sowing mayhem and chaos and bloodlust,” says Winston, who explains that such organizations include underground guerrilla organizations The Base and Atomwaffen Division, which are “overtly neo-Nazi and fascist.
