It may be external lid surgery, it may be conjunctival surgery, cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, squint surgery. Depending upon the eye surgery and the competence level of the surgeon, various types of anesthesia are available. The most common performed eye surgery is cataract surgery. Most of the cataract surgeries are done under what is called as a topical anesthesia or an eye drop surgery, where only eye drops are applied on the eye and intraocular lenses are implanted. Even a glaucoma surgery can be done under topical anesthesia. Some people do squint surgery under topical anesthesia, where only eye drops are used. In topical eye surgery, person has to be cooperative and not move the eye. Person will not have any pain or any sensation. Local anesthesia means anesthesia is given around the eye. There are various types of local anesthesia. This may be in the form of peribulbar anesthesia where a small injection is given around the eye. A modified version of this is called as the Medial Conal Anesthesia, where small injections given in the medial part here the eye becomes numb and the person will not be able to move the eye. This will last for about 3 to 4 hours, depending upon the injection agent that is used. If you want anesthesia to last longer, a longer lasting agent may be used. If you want the anesthesia to last longer, stronger lasting agent may be used. Many of the longer lasting agents may be used. The long duration surgeries are done under local anesthesia or if the person is not very cooperative, the surgery may be done under local anesthesia. Usually the anesthesia injection is very painless and patients are very scared that the injections are given into the eye but most of the local anesthesia injections are painless. Other types of local anesthesia is parabulbar or subtenon injection, were the injection is given during the operation, where a small opening is and in the conjunctival space and the infection space is given, so the person does not know the injection is given. The parabulbar injection can be combined with a sedation. This leads to a slightly sedate the patient. But most of the time the surgery may last for a very short duration, 8 to 20 minutes. So sedation may not be required. General anesthesia is usually reserved for young children, who require it for cataract, squint, or various other forms of surgeries. In these cases general anesthesia is recommended. General anesthesia is given by anesthesiologists. Anesthesia is not required in adult patient, it is required in child. So various anesthesia are topical anesthesia, or injections, what is called as local anesthesia and general anesthesia. So depending upon the persons cooperation, a surgeon may decide what is the best anesthesia for you.
