Welcome to Valley Hills Mall in Hickory, North Carolina—opened in August 1978, which makes it about 47 years old as of summer 2025. Today we’re walking through the anchors, the food court, and the small businesses—and I’ll share how this place fits into Hickory’s economy. Set at Catawba Valley Boulevard and Highway 70, Valley Hills is Hickory’s two-level regional mall—about 862,000 square feet—with anchor stores Belk, Dillard’s, and JCPenney still holding down the corners. From day one, this was a destination. It launched with Belk and Sears in ’78, added JCPenney in 1988, and Dillard’s in 1999 alongside the mall’s big renovation and new food court. The upper-level food court replaced an older one near Sears. It’s remained a busy gathering area for families, teens, and walkers—especially on weekends. Exact mall-specific sales figures aren’t public, but here’s what we can say with numbers: Property value & city taxes: In the City of Hickory’s 2024 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, Valley Hills Mall appears among the city’s top taxpayers with an assessed value around $45.7 million. With the city’s revenue-neutral tax rate of $0.455 per $100 of value at that time, that’s roughly $200K+ a year in city property tax—before you even count county taxes. That funds things like public safety, streets, and parks. Sales & jobs: The mall’s stores generate local sales tax that helps fund city/county services, and they provide retail and service jobs. Countywide, travel and tourism added $12.31M in local tax revenue and $14.08M in state tax revenue in 2024—retail and malls like this help capture those visitor dollars.
