After the first rescue workers arrived, it quickly became clear that it was a forest fire that was spreading rapidly. The alarm code was promptly raised to the highest level, resulting in all available water carriers in the city being immediately dispatched to the scene. In addition, the head of the Sundern Fire Department declared a city alert, alerting all units throughout the city of Sundern to the scene. Together with the Hochsauerland District Control Center in Enste, the District Fire Chief, and the District Fire Chief, we coordinated the large-scale operation. A total of over 630 emergency personnel with more than 120 vehicles from Sundern, the entire Hochsauerland District, and neighboring districts were involved. Due to the difficult terrain, the firefighting water supply was particularly challenging. Hose lines were laid over several kilometers, and a police helicopter with a fire extinguisher tank was deployed, which drew water from the nearby Sorpesee. With the help of forestry companies, wide firebreaks were cut to prevent further spread. The fire was brought under control by the evening. Follow-up extinguishing efforts continued into Sunday morning. After more than 22 hours, the fire was finally declared out. The burned area amounts to over 5.5 hectares.
