Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Capcom Publisher: Capcom Year of Release: 1995 Game Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- The latest in a series of sequels to seminal coin-op "1942", 19XX is a mid-90s update to the classic shoot 'em up. The title alone suggests Capcom realised they'd need to do something a bit a different with this sequel; keeping the "19" was enough to maintain brand recognition, while using XX gave the developers some freedom in terms of design and aesthetics. What we end up is a game that feels like a natural successor to the likes of 1942 and 1943, but one with a slightly more futuristic overtones - Capcom needed to find a way to make a game about flying WWII-era aircraft feel like a compelling experience, and I would say they did a pretty good job. From the outset, players must choose from a selection of different aircraft in which to engage the enemy. Each plane has varying levels of speed, agility and weapon power, so you'll need to decide where your priorities lie. The primary weapon of each craft can be upgraded by collecting power canisters during gameplay, and there are additional weapons to collect that change the type of projectiles being fired. Holding down the fire button will launch a "homing" shot, which causes waves of energy blasts to track towards the enemy hit by the initial blast; it's a boon against medium and boss-tier enemies because you can continually chip away at their health whilst dodging the plethora of projectiles headed in your direction. Speaking of which, 19XX makes for a serious challenge. I'm not sure I'd consider this an actual "bullet hell" shooter, but it's not far off; you'll definitely need quick reflexes and good eyes to dodge the flak, missiles and plasma bolts filling the skies. Overall, 19XX is an excellent shooter. It looks and sounds great, and gives the series a shot in the arm. It's worth checking out, given the chance.
