The vulva includes the opening of the vagina (sometimes called the vestibule), the labia majora (outer lips), the labia minora (inner lips), and the clitoris. Around the opening of the vagina, there are 2 sets of skin folds. The inner set called the labia minora, is small and hairless. When the labia are large they cause significant discomfort and excess sweating. The really urgent indication for reshaping the female vulva would be in the case of a person with ambiguous genitalia to improve the chances of a normal sexual life. This includes feminizing the shape of the clitoris and labia. A lot of women also complain of vaginal infection because they can’t maintain the hygiene of that part. It is also important for athletes because constant running and exercise cause friction and looks embarrassing. A labiaplasty can be done using either a general anesthetic or a local anesthetic with sedation. It involves shortening or reshaping the vaginal lips. The unwanted tissue is cut away with a scalpel or laser. The loose edge may be stitched with fine, dissolvable stitches.
