Here is the CSL Assiniboine arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on the morning of April 3, 2023. She had been sitting in the anchorage area outside the harbor waiting for her turn to load taconite (iron ore pellets) at the Canadian National dock. Once her fleet mate the CSL Niagara departed, the Assiniboine lifted anchor and made her way in through the Duluth shipping canal to load. The taconite was scheduled for delivery to Nanticoke, Ontario. As she makes her way over from the anchorage, we can also see the Paul R. Tregurtha in the background shortly after she departed Duluth. A long plume of steam from her exhaust scrubbers shows she is pushing ahead at full throttle, making her way to cross Lake Superior before the oncoming storm arrives. The CSL Assiniboine announced her presence in the shipping canal with a captain's salute, which the Aerial Lift Bridge answered in return. The Assiniboine's horn has a very distinctive "squeak and growl" sound that most ships on the lakes do not have. The first squeak is somewhat startling, as it's not a noise you're expecting to come out of a ship's horn! Regardless, it's always a pleasure to get salutes from arriving ships. The Assiniboine was launched in 1977 as Jean Parisien for Canada Steamship Lines. According to the Boatnerd website, the ship "is powered by twin Pielstick 10PC2-2V-400 10-cylinder, four stroke cycle, single acting 4,500 b.h.p. diesel engines built by Crossley Premier Engines Ltd., Manchester, England. These engines burn intermediate grade 60 fuel and drive a single controllable pitch propeller giving the vessel a rated service speed of 15 m.p.h. She is equipped with a controllable pitch bow thruster." In 2004, the Jean Parisien went into drydock and had a $30 million replacement of her cargo section. Following the installation of the new cargo section, she was given her current name CSL Assiniboine. At present, she is capable of a maximum load of approximately 36,800 tons. Her current dimensions are 739 feet long and 78 feet wide, built to the maximum size allowed by the Welland Shipping Canal and St. Lawrence Seaway.
