Standing with Giants at Royal Armouries Fort Nelson is an installation created by Oxfordshire based artist, Dan Barton to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War. The installation of 258 silhouettes pays tribute to the 255 members of the taskforce and the 3 female civilians who lost their lives in the conflict. Portsmouth played a significant role in the war, where thousands of Portsmouth dockyard workers prepared the ships that would carry British troops 8,000 miles to the Falkland Islands. Later, Portsmouth was the scene of emotional homecomings, when huge crowds flocked to greet the warships and meet loved ones returning from the war. It is fitting that Standing with Giants is on display at Fort Nelson with its panoramic views over Portsmouth Harbour. Many of the silhouettes have been placed high up on the ramparts poignantly facing out to sea. Standing with Giants is put into context by the museum’s Falklands 40: What Portsmouth Saw exhibition, marking the 40th anniversary of the war through personal stories, images from local newspaper The News and footage from BBC South. Standing with Giants is on display at Fort Nelson until 9 July 2023. Admission to the art installation is free and included with admission to the museum.
