One of our favourite, reliable, easy-going summer perennials is evergreen agapanthus. We grow the cultivars African Skies, Lavender Haze, and Regal Beauty, which begin flowering in succession, providing at least three continuous and glorious months of sumptuous blue heads bursting with pretty summer flowers. These are undemanding plants, provided they are given some protection over the winter season, and we only feed once monthly. There is a relatively newly noted pest called the agapanthus gall midge. It is worth being vigilant for signs of the midge larvae (especially across the southern UK counties), and also choosing cultivars that are less susceptible.
