On December 20th, 2023, a man who had worked in the same British factory for 40 years cured the last Avon tire ever made in the United Kingdom. 350 workers were made redundant. 112 years of production ended. Then Goodyear moved Avon motorcycle production to a Dunlop factory in France. That is what consolidation looks like when it finishes the job. Three corporations now control the motorcycle tire market that most riders think of as competitive. Bridgestone — the world's largest tire company — is the OEM fitment on hundreds of new motorcycle models before you make a single choice. Pirelli and Metzeler have been run by the same company since 1986, and from 2015 to 2025 that company operated under controlling interest by a Chinese state enterprise significant enough that the Italian government invoked emergency Golden Power rules to limit their control. And Sumitomo now owns Dunlop globally and completely, with Avon production absorbed into Dunlop's French factory after the original British site was shut down. This video exposes the OEM tire trap that puts a brand on your bike before you have a say, the Pirelli-Metzeler consolidation that most riders have never connected, the ChemChina acquisition that put a Chinese state enterprise in control of MotoGP's tire future, and the death of Avon Tyres as a window into what conglomerate math does to century-old brands. We also identify the three tire brands that have maintained genuine independence: Michelin, Continental, and Shinko.
