« The composition of the Etude for B Clarinet dates from 1821. It was dedicated to a clarinet with whom we are unfamiliar but whom the autograph manuscript designated as « l’amico Begnigni ». Compositions for Clarinet were quite rare in the instrumental literature of the time, and not only in Italy. Taking in consideration the date of composition as well as well as other various analogies, we have cause to believe that Nicolò Paganini’s Etude for solo clarinet, published only 1 year earlier, served as a model for Donizetti’s piece. The composition of the etude is also a reminiscent of Paganini’s Capricci, in its aim to achieve technical virtuosity not as an end in itself but imbued. »
