Mukut Chandra Kumar, a Secretary of the Lahkarghat Gaon Panchayat in Nagaon, was caught accepting a bribe for "releasing a cheque for house repairing work." Kumar is among three Assam government officials caught red-handed while accepting bribes in the last twelve hours. The complainant said, "The Secretary (Kumar) had asked for Rs. 50,000 from Contractor Sahed Ali and talked to me about it. When I approached the Secretary, he said that Rs. 50,000 would be mandatory for the work." In another bust, Anowar Hussain, a Lower Divisional Assistant at the F A Ahmed High School, was nabbed red-handed while accepting a bribe from a complainant "for processing pension works" on Thursday. On Wednesday evening, another team of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption caught Sub Inspector Suruzul Haque of the Nagaon Police Station after he accepted a part of demanded bribe from the complainant for giving him relief in a pending case. The vigilance department has massively stepped up its operations against corrupt government officials in the past couple of weeks. In a major bust on March 22, the department nabbed Chief Engineer of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation Indrajit Bora while he was accepting a bribe amount of Rs 4,000.
