What is VRE? Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus

Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus or VRE are bacterial strains of the genus Enterococcus that are resistant to the antibiotic vancomycin. Enterococci are bacteria that are naturally present in the intestinal tract of all people. VRE infections may be hard to cure. Bacteria do not respond to many antibiotics. You may need more than one antibiotic to stop the infection. Wear gloves (clean, nonsterile gloves are adequate) when entering the room of a VRE-infected or colonized patient because VRE can contaminate the environment.
