In this video, we take a look at the Curtiss P-60, along with the XP-46 and XP-53, three American aircraft from World War II that attempted to replace the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk (or Tomahawk, if you prefer), the third-most produced American fighter of WW2. We first talk about the P-40 and why it seems to be more forgotten about than a number of other American fighter designs. We briefly talk about the early history of the P-40, and why Curtiss-Wright wanted to improve upon its design. We then talk about the XP-46, which as basically supposed to be a smaller and more powerful P-40 designed with notes taken from the Supermarine Spitfire and Messerschmitt Bf 109. We talk about why the XP-46 failed, before moving to the XP-53 and then the XP-60. We talk about the multitude of variants of the XP-60, all of the different engine configurations, names, and armaments, why they had about 10 variants for a prototype plane, and why none of them ended up succeeding. We end by talking about the failure of Curtiss-Wright in producing aircraft past WW2.
