Is the food noise in your mind habituated or genetic? The answer is YES. BUT, which one is the primary driver? The answer appears to be the following: Research suggests food noise is primarily and learned response to environmental cues that gets amplified by hormonal dysfunction acquired through obesity and other physiological changes. There appears to be some baseline variation in hunger hormone receptor function, but the evidence indicates: 1. Most people’s genetic variation doesn’t strongly predict who will respond to treatments including weight loss diet, medications, or surgery. 2. The obesogenic environment and repeated exposure to food cues create powerful learned associations. 3. These learns patterns translate to dysregulated satiety hormone secretion and receptor activity, as well as neurological changes that create skewed feedback loops. So the answer appears to be: it starts more as habituation, but chronic exposure can lead to acquired changes in hormonal function that perpetuates the problem - making it both, but with habituation as the primary driver.
