AFGHAN: TALIBAN FORCES CONTINUE EXECUTIONS AFTER TAKING KABUL

(28 Sep 1996) Natural Sound Taliban forces continued to carry out executions, Saturday, following their seizure of the Afghan capital, Kabul. The Islamic fundamentalists have pursued the fleeing government forces as they retreated from the devastated capital Kabul - seizing and hanging two aides of the country's Soviet-era leader. The executions come a day after former president Najibullah and his brother were hanged in public in the centre of Kabul. A day after their execution, the bodies of former president Najibullah and his brother Shahpur Ahmedzai are still hanging by wire nooses outside the Presidential Palace for all to see. Najibullah's body was bloodied and riddled with bullet holes. Thousands converged outside the Presidential Palace to take a look at the man accused of being a Soviet puppet during the 1980s. The Taliban waved rifles and copies of the Islamic holy book, The Koran. The rebels captured Kabul, Friday, following months of fighting. They now control two thirds of the country. The rebels developed as a student movement from the religious schools for Afghan refugees in Pakistan. They say they are seeking an end to the factional fighting which has dogged Afghanistan. Exhausted by years of rocket attacks and street battles, some Afghans welcomed the arrival of the Taliban. A few are pinning their hopes on the Taliban to bring about peace to the devastated country which has seen an estimated 30 thousand dead in fighting and thousands more injured. Although, the public displays of the corpses, may not bode well for an end to violence. Many are fearful of the new draconian laws they have imposed on other areas they control. Clerics have issued a dress code, instructing men to wear a traditional white skull cap, and women have to be covered from head to toe. Criminal offences are punished by amputation or even execution. As expected there were no women on the streets to welcome the Taliban, all are expected to stay out of the public eye.
