Primitive insects 1 March,2025 Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Arthropoda Subphylum: Hexapoda Class: Insecta Order: Zygentoma (Silverfishes) Family: Lepismatidae (Typical Silverfishes) Genus: Ctenolepisma Zygentoma (=Thysanura) Deepak -Family Lepismatidae. Ctenolepisma sp likely. Genus Ctenolepisma or Lepisma sp likely. noting that India currently hosts approximately 32 species of silverfish, with 22 belonging to the family Lepismatidae Microbiome Studies: Research has isolated various bacteria from the guts of Indian silverfish, including cellulose-digesting and potentially pathogenic species Diet: Generalist Feeders Ctenolepisma species are highly adaptable and can survive for months without food. Cellulose-Based Items: Their primary diet consists of starch and cellulose. This includes paper, books, wallpaper, and photographs. Organic Scavenging: They feed on breadcrumbs, dried cereals, plant remains, and dead insects. Protein & Fabric: They can digest protein-rich materials like dried meats and silk or cotton fabrics, though they generally avoid wool and fur. Self-Sustenance: They often eat their own cast-off skins (exuviae) to reclaim nitrogen and fats. Habitat: Dark and Undisturbed Outdoor (Wild): In India, species like C. udumalpetense and C. amrabadense live in forest soil (0–5 cm depth), under stones, or beneath rotting leaf litter and bark. Indoor (Synanthropic): They are found in dark, secluded spots such as: Cracks and crevices in walls or floors. Behind baseboards and inside electrical sockets. Undisturbed storage areas like attics, basements, and libraries. Why They Live Indoors The shift to indoor living, or "synanthropy," occurs for several biological and environmental reasons: Climate Stability: Indoor environments provide a consistent temperature (typically above 20°C) and protect them from lethal outdoor conditions like freezing winters or extreme heat. Humidity Control: Buildings often provide the 60%–95% relative humidity they need for successful egg development and hydration. Abundant Food: Human dwellings aggregate massive amounts of their favorite nutrients (paper, glue, and crumbs) in small, safe spaces. Human Transportation: They spread rapidly by "hitchhiking" on materials like cardboard packaging, archive materials, and hygiene products transported between buildings. Dehumidifiers: Aim to keep indoor humidity below 50–60%. In coastal or monsoon-heavy areas, even small silica gel packets in cupboards can help. Ditch Cardboard: Silverfish love the glue in corrugated cardboard. Declutter old newspapers, kites In Indian libraries or home collections: Spacing: Leave a small gap between the back of the books and the wall to allow airflow. IDENTIFICATION: Lepismatidae: compound eyes only; body covered with scales Tricholepiidae: ocelli only; body not covered with scales Nicoletiidae: no eyes; body covered with scales or not. Habitat damp places indoors; under bark, in leaf litter, caves, ant/termite nests, etc Nocturnal and quick runners, solitary by nature but gather around food. If something is starchy, protein rich it's on the menu. Because of that they are considered household pest as they damage wallpaper, books, wood etc Silvery scales and fish like movement. Silverfish might be small, but they’re tough! 💀 These pests survive months without food and love humid spaces. Habit and habitat All are very agile insects but can't jump. Many species live in leaf litter, under bark, and in other places with high humidity, others are extremely resistant to desiccation and have the ability to take up water from the atmosphere Omnivorous or phytophagous Individuals may live for several years, and as many as 60 molts have been recorded. Economic significance can secrete cellulase and hence various lepismatids (Family Lepismatidae) are pests in human habitation where they feed on paper, glue, and other materials. Ex. Lepisma sachharina Linnaeus Approx. 28 species from india. The silverfish, or lepism, is a species of insect belonging to the order zygentomas and the family Lepismatidae. It is sometimes still designated to the Order of Thysanurs, although this order is no longer recognized... 😀 They want starches from the glue?? 🐟✨ Silverfish: The Shiny, Sneaky Pests in Your Home! 🏡📚 🔹 Why the Name?
