NIGERIA POLICE FORCE ISSUES WARNING ON UNNATURAL OFFENCES AND SAME SEX MARRIAGE

Nigeria Police Force has cautioned the public on the legal ramifications of unnatural offences and same-sex marriage within the country. This was made known in a press statement signed by the force public relations officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, following a trend in an online activity encouraging the practice which is deemed illegal under the Nigeria Laws. Historical accounts states that since Northern Nigeria was a British protectorate in 1904, homosexuality has been prohibited. The whole Nigerian Colony and Protectorate was later included in the 1916 law. According to research, public acceptance of homosexuality in 2013 was only one percent, but in 2019, the number had risen to 7%, an increase of six percent. Even though illegal, Over the years some Nigerians have come out to identify themselves as homosexuals. In response to this, The Nigerian Police Force through it's force public relation officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has underscored the gravity of unnatural offences and same sex marriage, following the trend on social media of some individuals, visibly encouraging and associating themselves with activities, perceived to be unnatural in the Law. ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi emphasized that sections 214 to 217 of the Nigerian criminal code Act, and section 284 of Nigerian penal code, explicitly criminalize act considered unnatural, and those found guilty may face legal consequences. Parents and guardians were urged to support the Police in the fight against such acts, and report all suspicious activities related to unnatural offences or same-sex marriage. #adbn #adbnnews #adbntv
