So... let's talk about "women helping women" in the sewing community. Recently, I got an email from a fellow female business owner who hit me up for what was really free work under the guise of "helping each other out." Sounded like she wanted to "pick my brain" about YouTube and claimed she wanted a new friend to talk to about it. If you want me to offer advice or information that you plan to use to make more money for YOUR business, it’s disrespectful and audacious to expect an even smaller business to go out of their way to help you for zero compensation or lacking an equal exchange of value. I can’t believe how many messages like that I receive from people I don’t know. If you are sending an email or DM to someone asking them for something and you can’t clearly identify REAL value to the other party, please don’t send it. Totally different if I actually l know you, we’ve had previous interactions, you’ve commented on my YouTube vids, etc. But if this is our first exchange and you are already asking for a favor, I’m not even bothering to respond. Look, I’m not trying to be a jerk here but I’m not in a financial position to “help” out everyone who asks unless it’s an equal exchange of value.
