Pyotr Alexeyvich Romanov (also known as Peter the Great) grabbed Russia by the scruff of the neck and dragged it into the modern world. Born in 1682, he ruled Russia jointly with his half-brother until 1696, then took over alone when his half-brother died. If tyou enjoy biographies, read any of the excellent books on Peter. He was a strap;ping 6 foot-eight-inch giant among his people, and he led a reformation that turned Russia into a modern empire and world power. He built the Russian navy from scratch, led visits to the western world, met and defeated the world's best army of the times (the Swedes), and erected a major city (Saint Petersburg). He wasn't all good, of course. He led a decapitation massacre of the Strelsky (Russia's earlier military force), and he destroyed his own son, a weakling in his eyes.
