Canon R50V 10Bit 4K Video Test The Canon R50V is finally here. I know it’s a bit late. But better late than never. So you guys may know the original R50 shares the same APS-C sensor as the R50V. But this R50V has more video codec to choose from, we can now shoot in XF-HEVC S H.265 and normal H.264 MP4 codec. And also this is the first R50 series feature C-Log 3 profile. (Hopefully we get to see C-Log 2 on APS-c cameras one day). During my test, the 6K oversample 4K is beautiful. When I see the footage on the computer, I was like this video can’t be shot on a $649 camera. When you have the good light. The footage is just spectacular. So R50V can also do 4K 60p. But it’s not oversample from 6K. So it wasn’t as sharp as the normal 4K 24p/25p footage. And same with the V1. It has a big crop on 4K 50p/60p. So I ended up shooting more on 4K 24p/25p. (Note: the 4K 50p/60p was still sharper than the Canon V1 at 4K 50p. Maybe there is something to do with the lens or the sensor size) The native ISO for Canon Log 3 is now 400. Which is awesome for APS-C sensor. Even the Canon V1 native ISO was ISO 800 for C-Log 3. One thing I found it really annoying is switching between 4K 24p/25p to 4K 50p/60p in the menu. On the Canon V1, I can simply choose 4K 60p, then it shows me the 4K 60p will have a crop. But on the R50V, you have to select the “4K Crop” first, then you can choose 4K 60p. If you just wanted to choose 4K 60p, that option will be greyed out. Also the C-Log 3 isn’t in the menu too. What you have to do is, go switch between “Picture Style” “Color Filter” and “Custom Picture”. Then in the “Custom Picture”. You have to change the normal C1 color profile to C2 Canon Log 3. I think this is nothing to do with professional video camera set up. It’s just more steps for no reason. Over all, I think this is a really beautiful camera from Canon. The 4K image is spectacular. Hopefully the next R50V Mark II will have C-log 2, IBIS and no crop in 4K 60p.
