The assassination of Franz Ferdinand triggered a domino effect thanks to rigid alliances and fatal decisions – but what else do we need to understand about the start of the war? Subscribe here: https://bit.ly/subhistoryextrayoutube In the first episode of our new series on WW1 Myths and Misconceptions, Alexandra Churchill re-examines the causes of the First World War by cutting through traditional lists of long- and short-term causes, such as like alliances, militarism, and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand – to argue that imperialism was the driving force behind it all. As Churchill explains, countries old and new were obsessed with maintaining or gaining global power. And that meant war. We meet the major players: the ‘elderly’ empires (Austria-Hungary, Russia, Turkey), the ‘mature adults’ (Britain and France), and the ‘teenagers’ (Germany and Italy) – each nations desperate to establish themselves and claim imperial ‘stuff’. We’ll hear how Germany, in particular, felt surrounded and insecure, leading to arms races by land and sea, and ultimately to aggression in Europe. Alexandra Churchill is a historian and presenter who specialises in 20th-century history. Her latest book, co-authored with Nicolai Eberholst, is Ring of Fire: A New Global History of the Outbreak of the First World War (Bloomsbury, 2025).
