Research into the US manufacturing sector by the McKinsey Global Institute finds that the things we buy and consume in the US are increasingly made offshore. It’s not that all companies are going outside the US for cheaper labor. Companies are going outside the US to find more skilled workers, more modern factories, and companies that are better at using new technology and automation than domestic suppliers. By investing in US workforce and labor technologies, we can reverse the trend. The erosion of US manufacturing isn’t a foregone conclusion.
