In this video, I explore why an institution (and for our purposes, a trust) would wish to prove it is a legal charity. In other words, why would a trust wish to demonstrate that it satisfies the legal definition of charity contained in s.1 and 2 of the CA 2011 and what benefits flow from charitable status? Charities attract various special legal treatment, some of which applies across the board to all charitable institutions (e.g. they will apply equally to a trust or a company etc.) and some of which is specific to the trust law context.
