I've had quite a lot of questions about bedding compounds, caulking, sealants and whether or not to use these kind of products. Most of the boatbuilders I've spoken to have said a bare wood join will be best, due to the risk of splitting the planks if they can't squash the compound that is between them. This seems like a real possibility. I do like the idea of a very soft bead of sealant on the outside of the lap joint though, to help the boat take up, acting as a kind of temporary "stopping".
