Dima Hasao, a picturesque hilly district of Assam, is renowned for its rich biodiversity and agriculture-based livelihoods. Surrounded by forests and nourished by perennial hill streams, the region offers immense scope for fisheries development. KVK Dima Hasao is actively working to establish and popularize Integrated Farming System (IFS) models among farmers, integrating fisheries with agriculture and livestock for sustainable farm outcomes. These efforts enhance productivity, nutrition, income, and resilience, making fisheries a key driver of sustainable rural development in the district. Sri Uttam Thaosen, a progressive farmer from Langting under Maibang block, Dima Hasao district of Assam, once practiced traditional fish farming with limited income due to lack of scientific knowledge. His journey transformed after he came in contact with KVK Dima Hasao. Through skill training at KVK Dima Hasao, Gauhati University and ICAR research centre for Eastern Region, Patna, and support under the DBT-sponsored Biotech KISAN Project, he adopted integrated fish-cum-pig and fish-cum-duck farming systems. With continuous technical guidance, technological and inputs supports a scientifically designed piggery shed was constructed over his pond, ensuring efficient nutrient recycling. Improved piglets, scientific pond management (Carp Polyculture), regular liming, and the use of Khaki Campbell ducks significantly enhanced his farm productivity. As a result, his income increased three fold. Besides being a successful farmer, Sri Uttam Thaosen also serves as a Master Trainer, actively supporting training and awareness programmes organized by KVK Dima Hasao, inspiring neighboring farmers and promoting sustainable hill aquaculture based integrated farming across Dima Hasao. He has been also been honored with Best Progressive Farmers Award by ICAR ATARI Guwahati. Today, Sri Uttam Thaosen’s farm stands as a model of sustainable hill aquaculture based integrated farming system, ensuring year-round income, family security, and inspiring farmers across Dima Hasao.
