As of March 5, 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) continues to advance Phase 2 of debris removal operations in Pacific Palisades, a critical component of the region's recovery following the devastating Palisades Fire. Initiated on February 12, 2025, Phase 2 encompasses the comprehensive clearing of fire-affected properties to facilitate rebuilding efforts. On this rainy Wednesday, USACE-led crews were observed actively working on several homes located on Fiske Street, Embury Street, Villa de la Paz, and Toyopa Drive. The debris removal process involves meticulous segregation of materials into three categories: concrete, steel, and general debris. Concrete and steel are designated for recycling, while general debris, due to potential toxicity, is handled and disposed of following specialized protocols. This systematic approach ensures environmental safety and compliance with hazardous waste management standards. The Palisades Fire, which erupted on January 7, 2025, scorched over 23,000 acres across Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and the San Fernando Valley. The wildfire destroyed approximately 6,837 structures, displaced more than 105,000 residents, and claimed at least 12 lives. Fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds and prolonged drought conditions, the fire spread rapidly, overwhelming emergency responders and grounding aerial firefighting efforts. Phase 2 of the debris removal process is anticipated to span approximately one year, reflecting the extensive scope of work required to clear all affected properties in the Palisades. Officials emphasize that the removal of hazardous materials and structural remains is a crucial step toward rebuilding and restoring the community. The coordinated efforts of federal agencies, local contractors, and utility providers are pivotal in ensuring a safe and efficient recovery process. Residents are urged to submit Right of Entry (ROE) forms to participate in the government-sponsored debris removal program. The deadline to opt into this program is March 31, 2025. Timely submission of these forms is essential, as debris removal by the USACE cannot proceed without them. For more information and to access the necessary forms, property owners can visit the Los Angeles County Debris Removal website. The USACE remains committed to executing Phase 2 of wildfire debris removal safely, efficiently, and in partnership with the community. Their mission is not just to clear debris but to help communities across Los Angeles County lay the groundwork for rebuilding in a way that protects public health and the environment. As Pacific Palisades progresses in its recovery journey, the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders continue to play a vital role in rebuilding a resilient and thriving community.
