I kept hearing the term roguelike without really knowing where it came from. When I finally looked it up and discovered the original 1985 DOS game Rogue, I knew I wanted to try recreating that experience myself. In this video, I walk through the early stages of building a DOS-style roguelike in JavaScript from staring at an empty project, to getting the first bits of map generation on screen and slowly layering the game up piece by piece. Instead of jumping straight to a finished game, this is about the process: starting simple, staying visual, and letting the game take shape naturally. I built this using Pi.js, a small JavaScript library I’ve been working on that focuses on keeping things simple and predictable—without forcing a full game engine structure. It turned out to be a great fit for experimenting with classic roguelike ideas like procedural maps, tight rules, and minimal presentation. This video is part devlog, part exploration of old-school game design, and part excuse to recreate something that still holds up decades later.
