Canton, Ohio natives, Walter Williams, Eddie Levert, William Powell, Bobby Massey, and William Isles formed the O'Jays in 1958. They took the group name recommended by local DJ, Eddie O'Jay and soon gained a solid fan following in clubs in Ohio and Michigan. They recorded on the Apollo label in Detroit in 1961 but soon after signed with Imperial Records where they had their first national hit, Lonely Drifter, which entered the Billboard chart in September of 1963 and peaked at #93. They recorded on the Imperial, Minit, and Bell labels before coming to Philadelphia in 1969 to record material with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff for the pair's fledgling Neptune label. Several singles and an album were recorded on Neptune before the O'Jays were again without a label in the early 1970's. When Gamble and Huff formed Philadelphia International in 1971, the O'Jays were invited back to Philadelphia in early 1972 and signed to the label at that point. After eleven years of bouncing from label to label without really finding sustained success, their signing with PIR in 1972 sent their career off on a superstar track, now performing as a trio as both Massey and Isles had quit the group previously out of frustration with their career trajectory. Talk about bad timing for those two!
