(24 Jan 2014) A group of protesters gathered in Mumbai on Friday to demonstrate against a proposed Indo-Japan nuclear trade agreement, ahead of the upcoming visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to the country. Abe is due to arrive in New Delhi on Saturday for a three-day visit. He will attend the Republic Day Parade as Chief Guest and hold talks on key issues with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh. Nuclear trade agreement talks have centered around a deal for Japan to export reactors to India, to help the expanding economy with a consistent energy supply. Discussions began in 2010 but were interrupted by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. The protesters who gathered in Mumbai carried banners with messages reading: "You can't nuke our right to live! You can crush our bones, but not our will!" and "We protest nuclear trade, Mr. Shinzo Abe Go Back!" "This is height of hypocrisy, and we are gathering here today to protest against the Indo-Japanese nuclear trade agreement," said one man. Prakash Reddy, leader of the Communist party of India, said Abe was welcome to India but said that "if he goes on fostering that kind of multinational companies here, Indian people will revolt." Protests aside, agency reports on Friday suggested that Abe and Singh were unlikely to reach any civil nuclear agreement during the visit. Japanese officials were reported as saying that Tokyo has decided not to push the deal through because India is not currently signed up to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
