Radiology is one of the nine services included in our Clinical Services Plan. Our services are fragile and need to change. Our Board met in February and decided on the next steps for Radiology at Hywel Dda. What is Radiology? Radiology uses imaging techniques (such as x-rays) to diagnose, treat and monitor diseases and injuries identified within the body. Why does Radiology need to change? Diagnostic radiology services use imaging to help make a diagnosis of a disease or condition. Emergency diagnostic services are provided at our main hospitals 24/7; and planned services are provided five days a week, during the daytime only. Interventional radiology services use different types of imaging to treat conditions by guiding catheters or small needles through the body or taking biopsies. These services are provided for hospital inpatients or for planned day cases, currently provided five days a week during the daytime only our main hospitals. Radiology has seen a large rise in activity across all hospitals. At the same time, staff shortages are stopping us from providing services for longer hours. There are also difficulties maintaining up-to-date equipment across all sites. In all the options we considered for radiology, we keep emergency diagnostic radiology 24/7 at all four hospitals. What did the Board decide? Our Board chose Option 103, which was suggested by members of our community during the consultation. This option keeps planned diagnostic and day case interventional radiology at Bronglais from Monday to Friday. Over time, planned diagnostics will move to a seven-day service at Prince Philip and Withybush, which will also deliver weekday inpatient and day case interventional radiology. Glangwili will continue to focus on inpatient interventional radiology only. The Option will support quicker diagnosis and create a dedicated cancer focus at Prince Philip and Withybush. X ray services at Llandovery and South Pembrokeshire will be removed as part of the change. The Board also supported further work on the development of a new hub for planned diagnostic radiology, recognising that this will need additional engagement with our community at an appropriate time, as well as approval of a detailed and costed plan. How will this benefit patients? The change will support quicker diagnosis and create a dedicated cancer focus at Prince Philip and Withybush. To further strengthen the service, work will be done on the development of a new hub for planned diagnostic radiology, and we will need to work with our community to develop this further. All four main hospitals will still have 24hour emergency radiology, every day of the week. This means that in an emergency, people can be scanned quickly and safely wherever they are. What happens next? Over the coming months, we will be developing our implementation plans for this service change. We will communicate with our patients and communities ahead of any changes being made. In the meantime, our patients will continue to access radiology services in the same way as they currently do. We know that this change may mean that some patients will need to travel further to access care – but we are committed to continue working with our staff and communities. We want everyone to have the best care possible in the safest place. GFX: In short… We’re changing Radiology services so that: • More routine scans will be provided at Prince Philip and Withybush with Glangwili focusing on interventional radiology for people who are staying overnight as inpatients • X-ray provision at Llandovery and South Pembrokeshire Hospital will come to an end • There is faster diagnosis and stronger support for cancer pathways • We will explore, along with our community, how we can develop a diagnostic hub for Radiology services.
