【舍利塔】stupa 草堂寺里面有一座用红砖雕墙围成的护塔亭 There is a pavilion paved with red brick walls inside Caotang Temple. 亭内矗立着草堂寺最珍贵的文物 Inside the pavilion stands the most precious cultural relics of Caotang Temple— 姚秦三藏法师鸠摩罗什舍利塔 The Stupa of Master Kumārajīva. 当年鸠摩罗什大师在草堂寺 At that time, Master Kumārajīva translated lots of 翻译了很多的重要的佛经 Buddhist Scriptures in Caotang Temple. 临圆寂的时候 立下誓言说 Before passing away, he took an oath: 如果我所翻译的佛经符合佛教的原义 If my translation of the Scriptures is in line with Buddhism, 那么我去世之后 其他的都烧成一堆灰 everything will be burnt into ashes after I pass away, 只有舌头烧不坏 expect my tongue. 可以留下来成为舍利子 It could be left as Buddhist relics. 后来火化时 果然就留下了晶莹剔透的舌舍利 Later, a crystal clear tongue relic was left after cremation. 这段奇事充分说明了 This story fully demonstrated that 鸠摩罗什大师他翻译佛经的水平那是太高太高了 the translating accomplishement of Master Kumārajīva was very high. 罗什大师舌舍利塔的塔身是八面十二层 The Stupa with the tongue relic of Kumārajīva has 8 sides with 12 levels, 用纯玉石镶拼而成 inlaid with pure jade. 每层玉石的色彩都不相同 The color of each level is different with altogether 8 colors. 有八种颜色 俗称八宝玉石塔 So it is called Eight Treasure Jade Pagoda. 【烟雾井】 Smoke Well 舍利塔北边的竹林深处 Deep in the bamboo forest on the north of the Stupa, 掩映着远近闻名的烟雾井 there lies a famous Smoke Well. 由于地热的作用 Due to the effect of geothermy, 早晚都有一缕缕烟雾从井口冒出来 there is smoke coming out from the well each morning and evening, 缭绕在寺院上空 lingering over the temple. 远远地看上去 It looks like gauze and swaying like smoke 如轻纱又像烟雾般地摇曳飘散 when looking from far, 让人觉得像是到了如梦如幻的佛国境界 which makes people feel like in the dreamy realm of Buddha. 这就是被称为古长安八景之一的草堂烟雾 This is one of the eight scenes in ancient Chang’an – Smoke of Caotang (Hall of Straw). 有许多文人墨客留下了诗篇 There are many literati leaving poems here 来吟咏草堂烟雾 to appreciate the Smoke of Caotang. 现存于西安碑林的关中八景石碑上 There is one poem from Zhu Jiyi of Qing Dynasty 有清人朱集义的诗 on the Stele of Guanzhong Eight Scenes in Xi’an 这首诗就生动地描绘了这一奇景： This poem vividly describes this magical scene: 烟雾空蒙叠嶂生 Smoke came out with the mountain covered, 草堂龙象未分明 The scene of Caotang cannot clearly discerned. 钟声缥缈云端出 The ring of the bell vaguely came from the cloud, 跨鹤人来玉女迎 The person arrived riding a crane and the fairy welcomed. 舍利塔亭的西侧矗立着元代所刻的 The one towering over the west of the Stupa is 逍遥园大草堂栖禅寺宗派图 the drawing of the schools of Dacaotang Qichan Temple of Xiaoyao Garden. 这样的一方碑文 It is an inscription. 碑文中记载了和鸠摩罗什有传承关系的僧众434人 It documents 434 monks that have the master-apprentice relationship with Kumārajīva. 这是研究鸠摩罗什事迹的最为宝贵资料之一 This is one of the most precious materials in researching Kumārajīva.
