An advanced persistent threat (APT) is a covert cyber-attack on a computerized network where the attacker gains and maintains unauthorized access to the targeted network and remains undetected for a significant period. During the time between infection and remediation, the hacker will often monitor, intercept, and relay information and sensitive data. The intention of an APT is to exfiltrate or steal data rather than cause a network outage, conduct a volumetric DDoS attack, encrypted the data (Ransom or infect systems with malware. APTs often use social engineering tactics or exploit software vulnerabilities in organizations with high-value information. From stealing intellectual property to obtaining personal financial data, APTs are designed to sidestep any security provisions in place. The information gather may be used later to cause as much damage and disruption as possible. In Feb 2021, this type of attack was used to attempt to poison a water treatment facility in Florida. A determined and experienced criminal (or more likely a criminal group) may utilize multiple entry points and vectors to gain what they want and could evade detection for months and even years.
