Visitors to Zone 2 of Menik Farm in Vavuniya district in Northern Sri Lanka are usually greeted by rows and rows of makeshift tents housing close to 35,000 people at last count...there were about 60,000 people here until a few weeks ago nearly half of them have now returned to their homes because of the increased pace of the resettlement process by the Government. Menik Farm hosts the largest IDP camps in the North.refugees from the Vanni.who fled during the last few months of the fighting. The UN Assistant Secretary General, Mr. Ajay Chhibber, was in Sri Lanka recently and travelled to the districts of Vavuniya and Mannar where UNDP is involved in helping the resettled. The ASG talked with the IDPs in the camps about their problems and their hopes for the future. He assured the families of UNDP support in helping them restart their lives once they return to their villages. Mr Chhibber also met parents who had lost their children in the war...UNDPs Access to Justice project is working with these families to secure civil documentation including death certificates for their children. From Vavuniya the ASG travelled to the Rice Bowl area in Mannar District the pockmarked houses and collapsed infrastructure in the area bear witness to the last few weeks of the conflict things are improving though.the Government has nearly completed mine-clearance in the area and families are returning in the hopes of a better future.
