There is hardly any community in India, which does not worship Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. Goddess is worshipped at every household with great ardour and devotion. Lakshmi is a deity, who is worshipped every day in most of the Bengali households. Every morning, the goddess is cleaned with a wet cloth and decorated with fresh flowers. Then the lady of the house offers her prasad along with a glass of water. In the evening, the deity is again offered prasad and water. Lamps and incense sticks are lighted. Then a Shankho is sounded. Thursday is a special day for the goddess and preferable time for Puja is Sandhya Kaal. After taking a bath, the Puja place is cleaned and all the sheets of the shelves, clothes are changed. Beautiful designs called Alpana are made in front of the goddess with the paste of rice. Ghat and other utensils are cleaned. Fresh water is poured in the 'Ghat' ( Kalash) and Ghat is placed over little mati, dhan, and durba. A fresh aam pallab with 5,7,9 or 11 mango leaves is put in it. On this one whole fruit is placed. The idol is decorated with more flowers and offered sweets and fruits. Lamps and incense sticks are also lighted. In earlier days married women used to put Alta, Sindur etc before sitting for Puja. After all the preparations are made, the 'Panchali' is read and 'anjali' (ovation with flowers) is offered. A 'Panchali' ( a small booklet written in praise of the goddess) is read out with a special rhythmic tone and is read by devotees especially women folk to ascertain peace and happiness in their household.
