Police raided four group safe houses in Mexico City and one in the neighboring state of Mexico. They seized weapons, detonators, propaganda and mobile phones, Deputy Attorney General Gilberto Higuera Beltran told a news conference on Tuesday. They also confiscated thousands of dollars in cash, six handguns, 460 cartridges, five detonators, military clothing and other goods. Army general Javier Del Real said the raid was a strong blow against the guerrilla group. The general also said the five suspects had planned other attacks. The August 8 bombings were claimed by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of the People, known by its Spanish initials of FARP. It is believed to be an offshoot of the People's Revolutionary Army, which appeared in 1996 with a wave of attacks on police and army posts, many in the southwestern states of Guerrero and Oaxaca. The bombs were planted at branches of Banco Nacional de Mexico, or Banamex, Mexico's second-largest bank, which is being purchased by Citigroup. Officials said the bombs were not meant to cause serious damage but rather to attract attention. Critics complain that most of Mexico's banking industry has now been sold to foreigners after Mexican taxpayers spent billions in cleaning up bad loans made by the banks. The FARP and other offshoots of the People's Revolutionary Army have espoused a socialist revolution for Mexico and denounced President Vicente Fox's free-market policies.
